The Secret of underwater world by Moser

Moser glass engravers capture water world’s beauty in breathtaking detail

Prague, August 17, 2022 – The most demanding decorative technique – engraving – has been a building block of Moser Glassworks’ DNA since the company’s founding. This artform is passed on from generation to generation and its constant improvement is a testament of the glass factory's desire to preserve it for the future. The new diverse vase set depicting the water world – the Water World Collection - is perfect proof of this ambition. Each motif reveals a fragment of the enigmatic water world, and each vase is a carefully crafted result of long hours of precise work carried out by master engravers.

Perfect engraving requires the work of an experienced master with remarkable talent, aesthetic sense, skill and thoroughness. A more complex motif is first drawn on tracing paper, transferred to the glass using chalk and then highlighted with a marker. Only then does the engraving process start and is carried out using multiple discs varying in size and roughness. The engraver uses the discs to gradually remove thin layers of glass from the unfinished vase. The deeper the engraving is made, the closer a specific the motif or its part optically appears. Removing layers also lightens the color of the final product and creates new shades. In combination with the matte or glossy surface of the vase, the desired result is gradually achieved. Complex motifs demand many weeks of patient work carried out by the most skilled and experienced engravers.

Just like the engraving process, the world above and below the water’s surface is full of subtle nuances. Engravers from the Moser Glassworks captured it using crystal in the colors of aquamarine, alexandrite, and oceanite. A modern design with a polished platinum rim in three different sizes, each with its own finely engraved motif – that is the Chia Te Collection, which depicts life in and around coral reefs. The Globe Vases have a spherical shape, reminiscent of an aquarium, and are ground to have ten edges and also boast a masterful engraving spread over the entire surface of each vase. The first of the two motifs depicts the fish kingdom with jellyfish and seahorses, the second coral fish. The Gloriola Vase was designed for festive occasions. Its central dome depicts aquarium fish in their natural environment.

Most vases from the Water World Collection will be available only in limited editions. These include the lake world-themed Lirio Vase, which captures the beauty of freshwater fauna and flora and will be produced in a limited number of 100 vases. The voluminous Bernadette Vase has exceptional dimensions, and its key motif is an octopus - a unique creature with intelligence and an amazing ability to blend into any environment. The limit of this series will be 50 vases. The Water World Collection also includes amazing works of Jiří Šuhájek. His modern minimalist vases capture the tight family bonds that exist among water birds, swans and flamingos. The limit of Šuhájek’s series will be 88 vases.
