Crystal Globes for the Karlovy Vary International Film Festival Have Been Crafted by Moser for 25 Years
Karlovy Vary, June 4, 2025 – The main award of the Karlovy Vary International Film Festival – the iconic Crystal Globe – has been created at the Moser glassworks for a quarter of a century. The production of this prestigious prize is a highly demanding process. The glassmaker must gather only the purest molten crystal onto the blowpipe and shape it into a flawless sphere of precise dimensions using a beechwood mold. The globe is then hand-cut with millimetric precision to ensure it fits perfectly into the arms of the statuette that holds it.
“Our collaboration with the festival is not only a mark of prestige, but also a great responsibility. Each globe is crafted by the most skilled masters in their field, among the very best in the world. Knowing that their work ends up in the hands of the most respected figures in cinema is a tremendous honor,” says Martin Dvořák, CEO of Moser.
The statuette was first introduced in 2000, designed by artist Tono Stano. He found inspiration in the female form, captured in an unusual upside-down pose during a photoshoot with model Ema Černáková. This unconventional position allowed him to create a unique and dynamic shape that has since become a permanent icon of the festival and a key element of its visual identity.
At the 58th edition of the Karlovy Vary IFF, 24 years after its first unveiling, the statuette underwent a subtle redesign. It was shortened by 7.5 cm, the globe’s diameter reduced by 2.4 cm, and its overall weight dropped by 1.8 kg. “The statuette has evolved over time – we gradually refined its proportions, and the new version debuted at last year’s festival. It was a natural maturation, a dimension we had been moving toward,” explains Tono Stano. This revised version will also be presented at the 59th edition, taking place from July 4 to 12, 2025.
The Karlovy Vary International Film Festival and Moser are both deeply rooted in the city of Karlovy Vary, united by their shared passion for refined craftsmanship, art, and tradition. Their long-standing partnership is a testament to how exceptional handwork can intersect with film culture and promote the Czech Republic on the global stage.
